 Our Production:

The HITS! (Homeschool Instructional Theatre Society) Cappies entry was "Once Upon A Mattress," with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson,  Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer.  Our performances were March 24, 30 and 31, 2007.

"Once Upon A Mattress" is the classic Broadway musical about a medieval kingdom's search for a proper princess to marry the hapless Prince Dauntless the Drab. Everyone wants to see the lonely prince engaged – no one else can get married until he does.  Everyone, that is, except the domineering Queen Aggravain, unwilling to cut the royal apron strings. Enter Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, loud, brave and dripping wet (having swam the moat!). She boldly declares herself a contender for the Prince's hand. But to show she is a true princess, she must prove that she is too delicate to sleep on 20 mattresses if there is even a tiny pea underneath them. What happens next?

Our Fall production, "Medieval Madness," an evening of medieval-themed one-act plays, was held on November 28 and 29 at the James Lee Community Center Theatre in Annandale.  "Medieval Madness" consisted of three plays:

“The Pale Pink Dragon” - The kingdom of Caladar is in an uproar. Sweet, kind Princess Pinkie has disappeared and a dragon lurks in the forest, who will surely devour the princess. Gallant Prince Hal and an entourage set out to destroy the dragon. The dragon, however, turns out to be pale pink and lovely - and Hal cannot bring himself to kill it. Will Princess Pinkie be saved?

“The Great Pandemonium” - Drama coach Jarred Nusthorp REALLY needs to get through his tech rehearsal of Richard the Third.  If only his cast and crew would FOCUS a little bit.  It’s enough to drive him mad!  Filled with funny moments, hysterical musical mishaps, and a surprise ending, this show is so full of historical, musical, theatrical and pop culture references, that it’s an education all by itself.  (And we provide a cheat sheet to the references and their answers!)

“The Ugly Duckling” - The King and Queen are having a hard time marrying off their plain daughter. When a scheme to marry her to a prince from a far away land doesn’t work, Princess Camilla is disguised as her maid Dulcibella, while Dulcibella pretends to be Princess Camilla.  However, Prince Simon has also switched places with his servant because he feels a little ordinary. Will the real prince and princess find true love?  Written by A. A. Milne, author of “Winnie the Pooh,” this sophisticated fairy tale is for adults as much as children.

2006 Season

The 2006 Cappies Gala was held on June 11, 2006 in the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  HITS!, the first homeschool organization to be admitted to the Cappies program, was nominated for Best Rising Critic (Chelsea Cook), Best Graduating Critic (Rin Barton) and Best Critic Team (Rin Barton, Chelsea Cook, Adam Cook, Taylor Hart, Leila Giles and Zach Allis).

And the winner is . . .

We were thrilled as the first award of the night was made to Chelsea Cook as the Best Rising Critic for 2006.  Her thank-you speech was televised the next day as part of the Cappies story on WUSA-9, and her picture appeared on the cover of the week's Burke Connection newspaper.

ABOUT STAR COMPANY:

STAR Company (Success Through Arts Repertory Company) and HITS! (Homeschool Instructional Theatre Society) were founded in February 2005, with a goal of providing serious theatre training, quality productions, and competitive opportunities for young actors from the ages of 9 to 19.

In May 2005, STAR Company held their first one-day workshop, focusing on improv, monologues, and scenes.  Eleven kids attended the workshop.  A second workshop took place in June, and by July, the company was able to hold two summer camps, “Vaudeville to Video” and a Summer Teen Theatre Seminar.  “Vaudeville to Video” resulted in an original musical production comprised of sketches and songs compiled from the Vaudeville era, with over 100 audience members in attendance.  The Summer Teen Theatre Seminar focused on teen actors, and included Stanislavski and Meisner techniques, comedic and dramatic scenes and monologues, and an original collaborative scene written by the teen actors.  They chose a topic of social relevance to them – stereotypes and images held about women.

As STAR Company’s first summer was wrapping up, we applied to the Cappies program (www.cappies.com) to provide homeschooled students the opportunity to take part in this prestigious high school theatre awards program.  The application was approved (a first for a homeschool group), and HITS! began operation with a Cappies Critics team and a cast for their first Cappies show, “Harvey.”

Additionally, HITS! has formed an improv (Theatresports) team that competes with local high schools.  The team's first meet was at Robinson in January, and they attended their second competition in March.
